Meadow breeding protection in the Bachinger Moos

Land management with the aim of protecting meadow breeding habitats

In implementation

We want to develop a grassland area in such a way that bird species that have hardly any living opportunities in an intensively used agricultural landscape find good breeding opportunities. The project should provide orientation for imitators!

Über das Projekt

Initial situation

The project area is located in a target area for meadow nesting birds - bird species of the agricultural landscape that breed on meadows. In principle, it is very attractive for these bird species. However, the breeding success is currently still modest because the grassland is too dense or is managed too intensively.

Why here?

Due to its central location within the meadow breeding reserve, the area is particularly suitable for development. It is already accepted by the target species. An improvement in breeding success on the site could be achieved with relatively little effort.

What would happen without the project?

At the moment, in contrast to neighbouring areas, the area is already being used without intensive fertilisation and later mowing. This is financed through the state contract nature conservation.

The condition of the area remains as it is: species-poor extensive.

Concrete measures

We therefore want to implement the following further measures with the help of the project: In order to develop the grassland in a sparser way, more suitable for meadow breeders, we want to renew the grassland scar once and enhance partial areas with autochthonous seeds.
In the process, individual plant species important for the development of a herb-rich and floristically valuable grassland are also introduced in a targeted manner.
Spring grazing should help to create a favourable alternation of short- and long-grass areas during the breeding season.
A pasture fence made of untreated wood is built. Alternatively, a temporary wetland is created each spring through minor soil removal and the purchase of a solar pump.
Partial area fencing serves to ensure that fallow strips also develop.
The removal of molehills is completely dispensed with

Protected species

Lapwing, Curlew, Skylark and Whinchat will benefit from the project as protected species.

You invest in the following ecosystem services:

Endangered target species on the site or in the direct surroundings
  • Whinchat
  • Skylark
  • Eurasian Curlew
  • Lapwing
Endangered target species in the direct surroundings
  • Bluethroat
  • Butterfly
Special habitat structures
  • Fallow strips, special structures (pasture fence made of untreated wood), ect.
Supported species
  • Meadow-head
  • Snakes Knotweed

So everyone can experience the ecosystem service

  • The area is accessible via a public street or path.
  • Pictures of the project are published annually on the online marketplace AgoraNatura.
  • The area can be visited after arranging with the land user.

Within sight of the town of Freising

These are indirectly supported

Endangered breeds of domestic animals

Important names
  • Murnau-Werdenfelser / Forest sheep are endangered domestic breeds and are used for land maintenance

Involved in the project

Bartl family business

The Bartl family farm wants to show that extensive grazing is a high-quality form of use that can preserve and promote biodiversity. In addition to forest sheep, Murnau-Werdenfels cattle can be used.

Documentation in the implementation phase

The project starts on 01.03.2022 and exactly goes 5years , provided all certificates have been sold.

You will be regularly informed about the progress of the project. For this purpose, the providers can provide short news, picture or audio material. The providers are obliged to report at least once a year whether everything went well with the implementation. If there are difficulties from your point of view, please contact us, the provider itself or the certification body.

Inauguration of the project area (10/22)

A sign to inform and present the AGORA activities was erected in the last weeks and inaugurated with a press event on site. During the 2022 grazing season, ground-nesting birds were observed regularly visiting the vicinity of the grazing animals and using the project area as a feeding habitat. Lapwings nested in the immediate vicinity and a pair of curlews also showed breeding behaviour. Unfortunately, the nest was destroyed by mammal predation.

We are looking forward to further developments in the coming years!
