Flowery for biogas
Cultivation of a perennial flower-rich biogas mixture
In implementation
We want to test a new perennial flowering mixture to produce biogas from fields rich in flowers. This will simultaneously create a habitat for wildlife species, especially wild bees, butterflies and field birds.
Über das Projekt
Initial situation
The arable land is part of an organic farm and is currently farmed organically.
Why here?
The farm operates a biogas plant and would like to try out this ecological variant of biomass production in order to perhaps cultivate this mixture on a larger area in the future.
What would happen without the project?
The farm would grow other crops to feed the biogas plant.
In contrast to the usual maize cultivation, which can be used in the biogas plant, the flowering area breaks up this monoculture.
Concrete measures
- Creation of a flowering area in the period 2021 - 2025 (5 years)
- Single sowing of 10 kg/ha BG70 from SaatenZeller in March 2021
- No use of PPPs
- N fertilisation exclusively via fermentation residues, max. 70 kg N/ha/a (according to withdrawal via yield)
- Late use date from 15 July
- 30 % of the area annually left unused/unmown over winter as a protected area for insect and field bird protection
You invest in the following ecosystem services:
Diverse wild plant mixture with 25 annual, perennial and perennial species
Special habitat structures- Winter stock: 30 % of the area
No use of insecticides
- Wild bees
- Butterfly
- Field birds
- Perennial flowering area with late use from mid-July: 20 metres wide
So everyone can experience the ecosystem service
- The area is accessible via a public street or path.
- Pictures of the project are published annually on the online marketplace AgoraNatura.
- The area can be visited after arranging with the land user.
Documentation in the implementation phase
The project starts on 01.09.2020 and exactly goes 5years , provided all certificates have been sold.
You will be regularly informed about the progress of the project. For this purpose, the providers can provide short news, picture or audio material. The providers are obliged to report at least once a year whether everything went well with the implementation. If there are difficulties from your point of view, please contact us, the provider itself or the certification body.

All beginnings are difficult (01/22)
In the first year, our attempt unfortunately did not work out. The seed did not emerge and practically nothing of the desired variety was seen on the area. So every beginning is difficult. But we have a great long test phase, will start the next sowing in March 2022 and hope that this year the diversity will bloom.
