Het doel van deze bloemenrand is om nuttige insecten aan te trekken: dit zijn zowel bestuivers alsook natuurlijke plaagbestrijders. Deze laatste gaat plagen bestrijden in de aanpalende landbouwgewassen, waardoor de landbouwer minder gewasbeschermingsmiddelen nodig heeft. This principle is called functional agrobiodiversity (FAB), or biodiversity that is beneficial to the land. In order to attract the youngest beneficial insects, a specific set of rules is necessary: the nectar must be accessible to the natural population, which has a short moonlight (i.t.t. bestuivers).
